Reform at the United Nations: Partnerships as Incubators for Change
The United Nations is currently undergoing the most significant transformation since its founding in San Francisco in 1945. The end of the Cold War, more than 15 years ago, and the ongoing process of globalization have fundamentally altered the environment within which the world organization operates. Almost all sides agree: The United Nations needs to reinvent itself in order to tackle the manifold challenges of the 21 st century. But what needs to be done to transform the organization into an effective player in the emerging system of “global governance”? What reforms have already been successfully implemented? What are the outcomes of the Millennium + 5 Reform Summit? What role can civil society and business play in facilitating reform in the world organization?

BusinessUNusual: Partnerships as Strategic Investments
Partnerships are not (primarily) about philanthropy. Partnerships offer novel ways for all participants—from business, government, as well as civil society—to achieve their objectives. This conference explores partnerships as strategic investments, such as risk management. What can companies do to engage bilateral donors and United Nations organizations in partnerships? And conversely, what can the United Nations and bilateral donors do to engage business more effectively? What are the interests and needs of business? In addition to addressing these questions, the conference will offer a space to learn about partnership programs currently implemented by bilateral donors and United Nations agencies, and ways in which companies can engage in them.
